One day Barrier-free Tokyo Private Tour for Wheelchair Users
Tokyo's icons at wheelchair pace: Asakusa, Sumida Park, Shibuya, Cat Street, and Meiji Jingu, on step-free routes with an English-speaking guide.
Overview
A full day across the most recognisable corners of Tokyo, designed around the accessibility upgrades the city made for the 2020 Games. You move from Asakusa's Kaminarimon and the elevator inside Sensoji's main hall, across the river to Sumida Park for the Tokyo Skytree view, on through the Shibuya scramble and the quiet promenade of Cat Street, and finish at Meiji Jingu, where the paved approach to the main hall was rebuilt for wheelchair access in 2016.
Your English-speaking guide meets you at your Tokyo hotel and stays with you through the whole day, choosing step-free routes, station elevators, and adapted restrooms at every stop, and adjusting pace and itinerary to your party. Transport is by accessible subway and on foot. A day built for wheelchair users and travellers with limited mobility, with the logistics handled so Tokyo's landmarks remain the point.
Details
❖ Hotel Pick-up
Your English-speaking guide meets you in your Tokyo hotel lobby. A short briefing on the day ahead, confirmation of accessibility needs, then on to Asakusa by accessible public transport.
❖ Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center & Sensoji Temple
55 min

The Information Center sits directly across from Kaminarimon and has a step-free elevator up to an observation deck with views over Asakusa and the Tokyo Skytree. You then pass through Kaminarimon and walk Nakamise, the covered commercial street that has supplied pilgrims and visitors since the Edo era. The route reaches Sensoji and the neighbouring Asakusa Shrine, two of Tokyo's most recognised places of worship. Sensoji's main hall has an elevator for wheelchair users, so the huge ceiling painting above the altar is part of the visit, not a view missed from outside.
❖ Sumida Park
10 min

A short move across the river to Sumida Park for the open view of the Tokyo Skytree rising over the Sumida River. The park's riverside path is paved and level. In late March and early April it is one of Tokyo's cherry-blossom viewing spots; the view holds up year-round.
❖ Lunch in Asakusa
After Sumida Park we return to Asakusa for lunch at a local restaurant the guide selects with your party, then take the subway to Shibuya. Stations are chosen for elevator access.
❖ Shibuya Crossing & Hachiko
15 min

Subway to Shibuya, using station elevators to reach street level. You cross the Shibuya scramble, the world's busiest pedestrian intersection (up to 3,000 people on a single green light, around 500,000 to one million crossings in a day), and stop by the Hachiko statue outside the station.
❖ Harajuku Cat Street
25 min

A level promenade built over the former Shibuya River, running between Shibuya and Harajuku parallel to Meiji Dori. Small independent boutiques, cafés, and streetwear shops line the lane. A calmer read of contemporary Tokyo youth culture than Takeshita Street, and easy to navigate by wheelchair.
❖ Meiji Jingu Shrine
80 min

Walk on through Omotesando to Meiji Jingu, the shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji, who oversaw Japan's modernisation from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th. The shrine sits in a forest of donated trees at the centre of Tokyo. At the end of 2016 the approach to the main hall was paved for wheelchair access, and the final stretch past the torii gates is now a smooth, quiet arrival on sacred ground.
❖ Hotel Drop-off
Your guide accompanies you back to your Tokyo hotel.
