Fukuoka Private Tour: Heart and Tradition of Hakata

A day across old Hakata: Tochoji's five-story pagoda, Kushida Shrine, Ohori Park, Fukuoka Castle ruins, a craft house, and a 140-year sake brewery.

Overview

Hakata is the old merchant half of Fukuoka, an ancient port city on the northern coast of Kyushu and for centuries the nearest Japanese harbour to mainland China. The trade routes brought tea, Zen, and craft traditions back to these streets, and they sit alongside the gourmet food and shopping the modern city is known for. Seven hours with a local guide let you cover both sides of Hakata at a relaxed walking pace, using public transport between districts.

The day moves through the temples and shrines that anchor old Hakata: Tochoji Temple, with its vermilion five-story pagoda and the towering Fukuoka Great Buddha, and Kushida Shrine, said to be the oldest in Fukuoka, where festival floats and a stone lifted by sumo champions are on display year-round. From there you step into Hakata Machiya Furusatokan, a preserved nineteenth-century townhouse where traditional Hakata crafts are introduced firsthand.

After lunch at a covered market in central Hakata, the route opens out to Ohori Park, a historical park that once served as the moat for Fukuoka Castle, built between 1601 and 1608. The castle walls and gates remain, and the observatory tower looks across the city. The afternoon closes at Ishikura Brewery, Hakata's only sake brewery with over 140 years of history, registered as an Important Cultural Property, where you taste local sake including freshly pressed labels available only here. Pick-up and drop-off are offered both at Fukuoka city hotels and at Hakata Port for cruise arrivals.

09:00

Your guide meets you at your Fukuoka city hotel or at Hakata Port for cruise arrivals. Pick-up time is flexible, especially for cruise guests. From the meeting point a short ride brings you across town toward the first temple of the day.

❖ Tochoji Temple

09:20 - 10:00 (40 min)

The vibrant vermilion five-story pagoda stands out among the green trees as the symbol of Tochoji Temple. It was founded in 806 by Kukai, the founder of the Shingon school of Buddhism, on his return from China. Inside the main hall, the Fukuoka Great Buddha rises over ten metres tall, enveloping you in its presence. On the temple grounds a small building called Rokkakudo is a registered cultural property of Fukuoka City, and a weeping cherry tree blooms majestically in spring. Your guide walks you through the highlights at an unhurried pace.

❖ Kushida Shrine

10:10 - 10:50 (40 min)

Kushida Shrine is said to be the oldest shrine in Fukuoka. The deities of prosperous business and longevity have watched over Hakata from here, and the shrine has been loved by locals since ancient times. The water of the spirit spring that wells up beneath the main hall is believed to grant longevity. The grounds also keep a lifting stone called the Chikaraishi that famous sumo champions have hoisted, and the festival floats of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa are on display year-round. If you are confident in your strength, you can try to lift the stone yourself.

❖ Hakata Machiya Furusatokan

11:00 - 11:30 (30 min)

Step into Hakata life of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The preserved machiya townhouse introduces the old way of living and the traditional crafts of Hakata, including Hakata Dolls, Hakata Bariko, Hakata Yoyo, and Hakata Music. In the souvenir corner you can find Hakata crafts and specialties, alongside famous confectionery and festival goods.

❖ Kawabatadori Shopping Street

11:35 - 12:35 (1:00 h)

This covered shopping street has supported the local life of the people of Fukuoka for generations. You can also enjoy local specialties such as seafood rice bowls with plenty of fresh fish, kamaboko fish cakes, and tempura. Arrival lands around lunchtime, so feel free to ask your guide for recommendations along the lanes.

❖ Ohori Park and Fukuoka Castle Ruins

13:00 - 14:30 (1:30 h)

Ohori Park is a historical park that originally functioned as a moat for Fukuoka Castle. Today it is loved by locals as an oasis in the city centre, where water birds and turtles share the pond. Fukuoka Castle itself was built over a seven-year period from 1601 to 1608, and the original walls and gates remain. The castle tower observatory looks across the whole city of Fukuoka. With cherry blossoms in spring and beautiful autumn leaves in fall, you can enjoy the nature unique to each season.

❖ Ishikura Brewery Hyakunengura

15:00 - 15:40 (40 min)

Ishikura Brewery is Hakata's only sake brewery, with over 140 years of history, and is registered as an Important Cultural Property. The sake here is characterised by a fruity freshness, and some labels use the local specialty of Fukuoka strawberries. You can also taste local sake available only here, including the freshly pressed new sake of the season.

❖ Hotel or Hakata Port Drop-off

16:00

Your guide accompanies you back to your Fukuoka hotel or to Hakata Port for cruise departure.
