Full-Day Gastronomic Kagoshima Adventure by Private Vehicle

Experience the best of Kagoshima, including its scenic beauty and local delicacies on a private guided tour.

Overview

A full-day tour through Kagoshima, at the southern tip of Kyushu, with a private car, a driver and a local English-speaking guide. The day is built around the city's signature pairing of natural beauty and refined cuisine, with Sakurajima volcano in view across Kinko Bay through much of the itinerary.

The morning opens at Sengan-en, the historic landscape garden laid out by the Shimazu family and now part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." The garden frames Sakurajima from its pine-shaded paths and the adjoining Shoko Shuseikan Museum gathers the early industrial heritage of the clan, from shipbuilding to glass and ceramics.

Lunch is a private setting at Kronos, a restaurant overlooking Sakurajima where Kagoshima Wagyu is served seared on iron. The breed was awarded first place in the National Wagyu Competition in both 2017 and 2022, and the marbling and depth of flavour set the meal apart for the day.

The afternoon turns to two craft destinations on the Satsuma Peninsula. Kanosuke Distillery, a Gold Medal winner at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, runs a guided tour of the stillhouse followed by a tasting of three whiskies at The Mellow Bar, a wide counter that opens onto the East China Sea. The day closes at Sakanoue Seicha Sabo, a tea house set among the tea fields of Japan's second-largest tea-producing region, with a quiet break and views over the rows of bushes.

Details
❖ Hotel or Marine Port Pick-up

09:00

Your guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Kagoshima city, or at Marine Port Kagoshima for cruise arrivals. The day begins with a short transfer in the private vehicle towards Sengan-en.

❖ Sengan-en Garden

09:15 - 11:15 (2:00 h)

Sengan-en is the historic landscape garden of the Shimazu family, laid out in 1658 by the lord of Satsuma and now part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." The grounds frame Sakurajima from pine-shaded paths and stone bridges, and the adjoining Shoko Shuseikan Museum traces the clan's role in Japan's early industrial revolution, from shipbuilding and coal to glass and ceramics. Time is left to walk the garden and the museum at an unhurried pace.

❖ Kagoshima Wagyu Lunch at Kronos

11:30 - 12:40 (1:10 h)

Lunch is at Kronos, a Kagoshima restaurant set above the bay with a wide view onto Sakurajima. The course centres on Kagoshima Wagyu, the breed awarded first place at the National Wagyu Competition in 2017 and again in 2022, served seared on iron in front of you. The marbling, the tenderness and the volcano on the horizon together make the meal the centrepiece of the day. On Tuesdays, when Kronos is closed, an equivalent wagyu lunch is arranged at Karen Kagoshima or at Ohkatei within Sengan-en.

❖ Kanosuke Distillery

13:30 - 14:30 (1:00 h)

Kanosuke Distillery rises on the Satsuma Peninsula above the East China Sea, a young Japanese whisky house that was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The flagship lineup, distilled and aged in three styles, is the heart of the visit and the reason the distillery has drawn international attention in only a few years of release.

A guided walk through the stillhouse shows the three custom copper pot stills the distillery built for its layered approach, and explains how the spirit takes shape under the cathedral roof. The philosophy behind the whisky is unhurried, with sea breeze and Satsuma air shaping the maturation in the warehouses next door.

The visit closes at The Mellow Bar, a long wooden counter that opens through full-height glass onto the East China Sea, where a guided tasting walks through three whiskies side by side. The pairing of craftsmanship, flavour and the western coast view at sunset is what makes the afternoon.

❖ Sakanoue Seicha Sabo

15:00 - 15:40 (40 min)

Sakanoue Seicha Sabo is a tea house in the heart of the Kagoshima tea fields, the second-largest tea-producing region in Japan and the country's leader in tea production value. A serene tea break is served with the rows of bushes visible from the cafe terrace, in a quiet pause before the return to the city. When the cafe is closed on Mondays and Sundays, an alternative tea house in the same area is arranged in its place.

❖ Hotel or Marine Port Drop-off

16:30

The private vehicle returns you to your hotel in Kagoshima city or to Marine Port Kagoshima, in time for cruise re-boarding or the evening's plans.
