Your English-speaking guide greets you at the Central Exit (中央出口) of Himeji Station at 9:50, ten minutes before the tour begins. Coin lockers and a staffed cloakroom on the concourse allow you to check any large luggage before setting off.

❖ Bus to Mt. Shosha

A twenty-minute local bus ride carries you north through Himeji's suburbs to the base of Mt. Shosha, the wooded ridge that has drawn pilgrims out of the city for more than a thousand years.

❖ Cable car up the mountain

10:30 - 11:00 (30 min)

The Shoshazan Ropeway lifts you 371 metres in under four minutes to the mountaintop station, its cabin opening onto a broad terrace with views across Himeji plain to the Seto Inland Sea. A short forest walk from the top station carries you into the temple grounds proper.

❖ Hike to the Last Samurai Temple Complex of Mt Shosha

A gentle climb through cedar and moss brings you to Maniden Temple, a cliff-side hall whose wooden stilts brace the mountainside like the corresponding balcony at Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera. Buy a talisman, offer a wish - this is the hall that stood in for the temple in The Last Samurai and again in GI Joe Origins: Snake Eyes.

Beyond Maniden lies the Founders' Hall, raised in 1007 to house the remains of Shoku Shonin, the Tendai monk who established Engyoji in 966 CE. Since the day it was completed, monks have said prayers here every morning without fail for over a thousand years - more than 370,000 days of unbroken devotion, rain, snow, or shine.

❖ Lunch at Sakura Saku

Back in the castle town, you take lunch at Sakura Saku, a family-run vegetable cafe just steps from the outer moat. The daily set is prepared by a certified vegetable sommelier and her husband, and dietary preferences from vegetarian to vegan to gluten-free are accommodated when noted in advance at booking. On Mondays and Tuesdays, when Sakura Saku is closed, your guide arranges lunch at a nearby restaurant selected with the same dietary care in mind.

❖ Kokoen Gardens

13:45 - 14:15 (30 min)

A short walk delivers you to Kokoen, nine walled gardens laid out on the foundations of the castle's former samurai residences. Each garden takes a different classical form - koi pond, tea garden, bamboo grove, waterfall - and each frames a different view of the castle keep rising above the treetops.

❖ Himeji Castle

14:15 - 16:15 (2:00 h)

The full afternoon is given to Himeji Castle, the White Heron itself: eighty-three interlocking buildings of white plaster and stacked timber, uniquely preserved through four centuries of war and earthquake. Your guide traces the towering stone walls, the intricate wooden joinery, and the hidden passageways designed to bewilder invaders - mazes, trap doors, angled arrow slits.

The climb to the top of the main keep is rewarded with a panorama of the city and the Seto ranges beyond, exactly as painters and printmakers have framed it since the seventeenth century.

❖ Sake tasting

16:30 - 17:00 (30 min)

A short walk brings you to a Himeji tasting bar whose shelves hold more than two hundred varieties of sake from the surrounding prefecture of Hyogo - the world's largest producer of Yamada Nishiki, the rice variety prized above all others for premium ginjo. Your guide helps you navigate the flight, from crisp junmai to aged koshu.
