Overview
Ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of arranging flowers, comes to you in the quiet comfort of your own hotel room. A professional female arranger of the Misho-Ryu school arrives with everything already prepared, so there is nothing to organise and nothing to carry: only the pleasure of creating. Over the course of an hour you learn to read the line, balance and open space that give a Japanese arrangement its grace, then compose a piece that is entirely your own.
The art feels approachable from the first moment. With 18 years of experience guiding visitors from abroad, your instructor explains the key principles of a beautiful arrangement in clear, unhurried language and encourages you to trust your own eye rather than any rigid formula. The result reflects your personal sense of colour and composition, shaped with gentle guidance yet unmistakably yours.
If you have a preference, you are welcome to tell us in advance which flowers and colours you love, and we will prepare them for the day as closely as possible. Alongside the arranging, a short lecture on the history of ikebana deepens the experience, revealing how a practice once created to welcome guests into the home grew into a refined art still cherished across Japan today.
When your arrangement is complete, it is set into a special container with floral foam so that it travels safely and keeps blooming in your room throughout your stay. Many guests find it becomes a heartfelt surprise for a travelling companion or a loved one: a living memento of a quiet, creative hour spent in Japan.

❖ The Misho-ryu Nakayama Bunpo-kai School
The Misho-ryu Nakayama Bunpo-kai school traces its roots to the Edo era, founded in 1807 in Osaka by Mishosai Ippo, a samurai warrior. In its earliest days, ikebana was created to be placed in the tokonoma, the alcove of a traditional Japanese home, as a gesture of welcome to arriving guests. Today the school teaches a range of expressions, from classic and modern arrangements to the freer tossed-in style and the shallow-vessel moribana style.
❖ Your Instructor: Asako Tsunoda
Asako Tsunoda is a member of the Misho-ryu Nakayama Bunpo-kai and teaches the traditional Kakubana and Shinka (Moribana) styles. She lives in Yokohama with her three children and her Danish husband, and has devoted her practice to making ikebana approachable for Japanese and international guests alike. With extensive experience teaching and demonstrating overseas and around 18 years of guiding visitors from abroad, she encourages every guest to discover their own unique and enjoyable style rather than follow a fixed formula.
❖ The Experience
This is a private lesson that unfolds entirely in your own hotel room. Your instructor arrives with every tool and material already prepared, so there is nothing for you to bring or arrange in advance. She begins by sharing the key points of a beautiful composition along with a short history of ikebana, then guides you as you create a piece in your own free style.
The arranging takes place at the table in your room, which should offer a surface of at least 60 cm wide and 45 cm deep for each person; a portable table can be provided on request. Up to two guests arrange at the same time, so a group of three or four takes turns under the instructor's attentive guidance.
❖ Your Creation to Keep
When your arrangement is finished, it is set into a special container fitted with floral foam so that it stays fresh, ready to be carried back and displayed in your room for the remainder of your stay. For those who would like to see it, a brief ten-minute viewing of the changing of the arrangement can also be included, and the finished piece makes a thoughtful surprise gift for a travelling companion or someone dear to you.
