Kamakura Cycling Tour: Temples, Bamboo Forest & Yuigahama Coast
Explore Kamakura’s ancient temples, bamboo forests, and scenic coasts on a relaxing cycle tour.
Overview
Discover the soul of Kamakura on a relaxed six-hour cycling journey that weaves together more than a thousand years of history with the city’s natural beauty and coastal charm. From a temple older than the Shogunate to a serene bamboo garden, from the towering Great Buddha to the gentle waves of Yuigahama Beach, the route reveals a Kamakura that few travellers ever see in a single day.
Despite the wealth of highlights, the tour proceeds at an unhurried pace along a nearly flat 10-kilometre path, so even those who don’t cycle regularly can join with confidence. Guide, bicycle rental, and admission fees to the visited temples are all included in the tour fee.

❖ Sugimoto-dera Temple
09:55 - 10:30 (35 min)

Just five minutes further sits Sugimoto-dera, the oldest temple in Kamakura. The signature feature here is a flight of stone stairs blanketed in vivid green moss, leading up into the precinct: one of the most fantastic photo spots in the city.
❖ Hokoku-ji Temple
10:35 - 11:15 (40 min)

Next door stands Hokoku-ji, long known as "The Temple of the Bamboo Garden". Step through the gate into a tranquil grove where towering bamboo stalks filter the sunlight into a cool, soft green glow. Pause for a moment of stillness as the everyday clutter of the mind washes away in this calm sanctuary.
❖ Masamune Sword Workshop
11:20 - 12:00 (40 min)
Heading back toward Kamakura Station, you visit the workshop of Masamune, Kamakura’s legendary swordsmithing lineage. Today the twenty-fourth-generation master Yamamura Tsunahiro keeps the craft alive, and a glimpse inside this rarefied space offers a window onto a swordmaking process found nowhere else in the world.
❖ Kotokuin (The Great Buddha)
12:10 - 12:40 (30 min)

At Kotokuin you stand before Kamakura’s most iconic figure: the towering bronze Daibutsu, a national treasure cast in the thirteenth century. Take that commemorative photograph beside the Great Buddha before pausing for lunch, with the freedom to choose a local restaurant that catches your eye.
❖ Hasedera Temple
14:00 - 14:45 (45 min)

After lunch you ride to Hasedera, where the majestic Eleven-Headed Kannon statue stands within the main hall. From the temple’s elevated observation deck, the entire sweep of Yuigahama Beach unfolds before you. In June, the hillside path bursts into colour with thousands of hydrangea blooms.
❖ Goryo Jinja
14:55 - 15:15 (20 min)

A short pedal brings you to Goryo Jinja, a small shrine famous for one unique sight: the tracks of the Enoshima Electric Railway pass directly in front of the torii gate. Trains glide by roughly every five minutes - a photograph of the carriage framed by the torii is a Kamakura signature you can capture nowhere else.
❖ Yuigahama Coast & Chikara Mochi
15:20 - 16:00 (40 min)

At Chikara Mochi, a venerable wagashi shop right in front of Goryo Jinja, you pick up traditional Japanese sweets before continuing to Yuigahama Beach. Settle in with your sweets, gaze out across the magnificent Pacific Ocean, and let the rhythm of the waves wash away the morning’s busy schedule.

❖ Kamakura City Agricultural Co-op
16:10 - 16:40 (30 min)

Following the Yuigahama coastline back toward the station, you stop at the Kamakura City Agricultural Cooperative Association shop, where colourful Kamakura vegetables fill every table. Tasty prepared foods and homemade breads are also on offer here, perfect for taking back to enjoy later at your hotel.
❖ Return to Kamakura Station
16:45 - 17:00
A short ride brings you back to JR Kamakura Station, where you return the bicycles and bid farewell to your guide, the day’s memories of temples, bamboo, sea breeze and Kamakura cuisine carried home with you.
