It typically passes through around twenty-five meticulous steps over the course of a month, a strengthening base layer followed by a lustrous topcoat that together lend each piece its durability and quiet elegance. Your experience is devoted to the final step of this time-honored process: lacquering the smooth inner surface of a wooden bowl, guided closely by the artisan at every turn.
Working at the master's side, you will sand the bowl to ready its surface, then choose your own color from a wide range of pigments and watch it blended with clear lacquer into a custom shade that is yours alone. Brush in hand, you will learn to hold the tool correctly and draw smooth, controlled strokes from base to rim, guided toward an even, beautiful finish.
Once complete, your bowl is set into a special curing box, where heat and humidity slowly harden the lacquer over about a week until it is ready for everyday use, a genuine piece of Kamakura craft rather than a keepsake from a shelf. Those who wish to go further may also lacquer a matching pair of chopsticks, a simpler cloth-rubbing technique that completes a handcrafted set to bring home.

Guided by a highly acclaimed artisan, you will explore the cultural roots and refined techniques behind the centuries-old art of lacquering. Crafting a traditional Japanese lacquered bowl is no small feat: it typically involves around twenty-five meticulous steps over the course of a month. A strengthening base layer, followed by a lustrous topcoat, gives each piece both durability and elegance. In this experience, you take part in the final step of this time-honored process: lacquering the inner surface of a wooden bowl, which you will be able to take home the same day.
Your hands-on session begins with sanding. After moistening the glossy inner surface of the bowl with water, you gently sand it to create the right texture for the lacquer to bond. Once fully prepped, the bowl is carefully cleaned with a soft cloth to remove any remaining dust or debris.
Next comes the lacquering itself. Before you begin, you select your preferred color from a wide range of pigments. The artisan then carefully mixes your chosen pigment with clear lacquer to create the perfect custom blend.
With this personalized lacquer ready, you learn how to hold the brush correctly, apply just the right amount, and use smooth, controlled strokes to coat the bowl from bottom to rim. Throughout the process, the artisan stays by your side, offering expert guidance to help you achieve a beautiful, even finish.
The lacquer, which begins as a liquid, transforms into a hard, durable surface thanks to heat and humidity that activate its natural enzymes. Once your coating is complete, the bowl is placed in a special curing box to protect and set it. After about a week, the lacquer is fully hardened and ready for everyday use.
