Kamakura Walking Tour: Temples, Nature, and the Great Buddha
Immerse yourself in the seasonal nature and the Zen Buddhism world of Kamakura, home of the samurai.
Overview
Kamakura was Japan's first samurai capital and, for a city an hour from Tokyo, keeps the ancient register almost fully intact: Zen temples in the forested north, mountain shrines hidden behind torii-framed caves, the 13-metre bronze Buddha at Kotoku-in, and the cliffside halls of Hasedera above the Pacific. Five hours on foot connect them end to end, moving from quiet mountain paths to the open shoreline of Yuigahama Beach.
Your guide meets you at Kita-Kamakura Station and sets the pace, with time to linger at a temple courtyard, to rinse a coin in the spring at Zeniarai Benzaiten, or to step inside the hollow bronze of the Daibutsu itself. The route runs through hydrangea gardens in June and under maples in autumn, and closes on the beach in time for a view of the sea.
Details
❖ Jochiji Temple
09:40 - 10:00 (20 min)

A Zen temple set in forest at the edge of Kita-Kamakura, founded in 1281 as a memorial Zen temple of the Hojo regents, the warrior clan who ruled the Kamakura Shogunate. The grounds are built for slow walking: a small wooden gate, flowerbeds, a bamboo grove, and a bronze statue of Hotei whose belly is rubbed for good fortune.
❖ Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine
10:40 - 11:05 (25 min)

Reached along the Daibutsu Hiking Course through the mountains, the shrine sits behind a torii framing a tunnel cut into the hillside. Founded in 1185, it blends Shinto and Buddhist devotion, and its cave holds a natural spring in which coins are rinsed: the tradition says money washed in the water will multiply.
❖ Sasuke Inari Shrine
11:20 - 11:35 (15 min)

Set deeper in the forest above Kamakura, Sasuke Inari is dedicated to the white fox who, by legend, came to Minamoto no Yoritomo in a dream and told him how to win the battle that founded the Kamakura Shogunate. In gratitude Yoritomo built the shrine here: more than a hundred red torii climb the slope, and the grounds are lined with hundreds of small white ceramic foxes left as offerings.
❖ Kotoku-in (Kamakura Daibutsu)
12:05 - 12:25 (20 min)

The Great Buddha of Kamakura, cast in bronze in 1252, stands 13.35 metres tall and weighs about 121 tonnes. Originally housed inside a wooden hall swept away by medieval storms and a tsunami, it has sat in the open air ever since. Visitors can step inside the hollow interior of the statue itself, a rare angle on one of Japan's largest bronzes.
❖ Hasedera Temple
13:30 - 14:00 (30 min)

Halfway up Mount Kamakura, Hasedera commands a long view south over Yuigahama Beach and the sea. The main hall holds an 11-headed Kannon carved in wood at 9.18 metres tall, one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan. The grounds bloom with hydrangeas in June and July; a short walk away is a small cave to explore by lantern light.
❖ Yuigahama Beach
14:10 - 14:20 (10 min)

The walk ends at Yuigahama, Kamakura's south-facing beach, where the sun lies over the water in the late afternoon. A moment to sit, take in the coast, and close the loop from the mountain temples of Kita-Kamakura to the sea. In summer the beach opens a line of umi-no-ie pop-up bars along the sand.
