Kamikochi Private Hiking Tour: The Pristine Heart of the Japan Alps from Matsumoto
A full day in Kamikochi: 10 km along the Azusa River past Kappa Bridge and Myojin Pond, under the Hotaka range, from Matsumoto.
Overview
Kamikochi sits at 1,500 metres in the Northern Japan Alps, inside Chubu Sangaku National Park. A designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Natural Monument, it keeps one of the clearest alpine rivers in the country and a skyline built around the Hotaka range, the peaks often called the roof of Japan. The walk runs gently along the Azusa River on a route of about 10 kilometres with barely any elevation change, so the day is less a climb than a long slow read of alpine Japan.
Your English-speaking driver-guide picks you up at Matsumoto Station or your hotel in Matsumoto city at 08:30, drives you into the park by chartered car, and walks the route with you. Nakanose Park and Kappa Bridge for the classic postcard frame of Hotaka, the Weston Relief for the history of mountaineering in Japan, Dakesawa Marsh for the quiet, and Myojin Pond at the turnaround. Lunch is a picnic in the forest of Usuyaki, the Matsumoto savoury pancake, with drip coffee. Rain wear is included and the cooler alpine air holds even when the valley is hot in August.
Details
❖ Pick-up at Matsumoto Station or your hotel

Meet your English-speaking driver-guide at Matsumoto Station ticket gate or at your hotel in Matsumoto city at 08:30. A short briefing, then into the chartered car for the ride up to Kamikochi, with a restroom stop around 09:30 along the way.
❖ Kamikochi Bus Terminal
Arrive at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal around 10:00, where private vehicles cannot go. From here the hike begins on the flat riverside trail along the Azusa.
❖ Nakanose Park

A calm riverside clearing where the walk opens onto the panorama of the Hotaka range across the water. An early chance to take in the scale of the valley before the trail narrows into the woods.
❖ Weston Relief
A bronze relief set into the rock face honours Walter Weston, the English missionary who popularised recreational mountaineering in Japan in the 1890s. Your guide frames the history of how the Northern Alps went from remote wilderness to a national symbol of the outdoors.
❖ Kappa Bridge

The wooden suspension bridge at the heart of Kamikochi, and the view most associated with it: the Azusa River running clear below, the Hotaka peaks framed across the top. A few quiet minutes on the bridge before the walk continues upstream.
❖ Dakesawa Marsh

A short detour brings you to a wetland framed by the spur ridges of the Dakesawa slopes. Green and still in summer, the marsh mirrors the ridgeline above and is one of the calmer spots on the route.
❖ Lunch in the forest

A picnic in the open air of Usuyaki, a Matsumoto local savoury pancake made with soaked soybeans and butterbur miso, with drip coffee. If the Usuyaki is not for you, let us know in advance and we will adjust.
❖ Myojin Pond

The turnaround of the walk. A small sacred pond at the foot of the Myojin peaks, fed by underground springs and held in place by the surrounding forest. The water is famously still, and the reflections are the reason most travellers come this far.
