Kobe Private Day Tour: One Day Highlights including Sake Tasting

A full day across Kobe: Mt. Rokko's herb garden by ropeway, a carpentry tools museum, Kobe beef for lunch, and sake tasting in the Nada brewery district.

Overview

Kobe is a port city squeezed between the Rokko mountains and the sea, opened to the world in the mid nineteenth century and still shaped by that exchange. Seven hours are enough to take in its three very different moods: the nature of Mt. Rokko above, the downtown grid around Sannomiya at sea level, and the sake breweries of Nada along the eastern shore. Your guide sets the pace, and transport between the highlights is on foot, by ropeway, and by a short train ride.

The day opens with a ropeway climb over the Nunobiki Falls to Japan's largest herb garden, then drops back into the city for the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, lunch built around Kobe beef, and a visit to Ikuta Shrine, the old heart of the neighbourhood. It closes in the Nada sake district at the Hakutsuru brewery, where a three-dimensional display walks through the brewing process and a tasting counter on the ground floor lets you try several of the house sakes. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are included within Kobe city and at Kobe Port, which makes the tour a natural fit for a shore day off a Diamond Princess or Celebrity Millennium call.

Details
❖ Pick-up at your hotel

Your guide meets you in your Kobe hotel lobby (or at Kobe Port for cruise arrivals) at 09:30. A short briefing on the day ahead, then straight on to Shin-Kobe for the ropeway.

❖ Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway

10 min

A five-minute walk from Shin-Kobe Station brings you to Herb Garden Sanroku, the lower station of the Nunobiki Ropeway. The glass cable car lifts you over the Nunobiki Falls and opens a 360-degree view of the Kobe Port below and the Rokko ridgeline above.

❖ Nunobiki Herb Garden

1.5 h

Japan's largest herb garden, set on the slopes of Mt. Rokko: 75,000 herbs and some 200 flower species laid out across the observation plaza, the terrace, and Kaze no Oka Square. The skywalk down the ropeway line adds a 10-minute stroll past Nunobiki Falls and the Gobonmatsu dam with the city spread below.

❖ Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum

1 h

The only carpentry tool museum in Japan, moved to its current building near Shin-Kobe Station in 2014. The collection holds more than 35,000 items, preserving the hand tools of a disappearing craft as part of Japan's ethnic heritage. Touch panels, videos, and hands-on displays let you handle the planes and chisels, and the fragrance of the timber carries through the galleries.

❖ Lunch - Kobe Beef

50 min

Lunch in a restaurant near Sannomiya Station, built around the city's namesake Kobe beef. Your guide books the venue to match your preferences, and a vegetarian or vegan alternative is arranged on request.

❖ Ikuta Shrine

20 min

The origin of the name Kobe and the most visited shrine in the city and long associated with love and marriage. Hundreds of couples hold their wedding ceremony here each year. The grounds include a small stream where a water fortune (mizuura mikuji) reveals its message only once floated on the surface.

❖ Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum

50 min

A short train ride east from Sannomiya to Sumiyoshi Station brings you to Nada Gogo, the five villages of Nada and the most celebrated sake-brewing area in Japan since the Muromachi and Edo periods. The museum, built into the brewery's No. 1 storehouse, reproduces the traditional brewing process with life-sized figurines and a three-dimensional display. A tasting counter on the ground floor closes the visit with several of the house sakes.

❖ Return to hotel

Your guide accompanies you back to your Kobe hotel (or Kobe Port) at the end of the day, usually around 16:30.
