Fukuoka's spotlight usually falls on Hakata, yet the castle town of Kokura rewards those who look a little further. On this private half-day walk, a local guide leads you through a compact city where feudal history, inventive modern design and everyday market life sit side by side.

The day opens at the TOTO Museum, Japan's only museum devoted to the toilet, where a century of sanitary innovation unfolds through playful, hands-on exhibits. The mood then turns to samurai grandeur at Kokura Castle, whose rare "kara-zukuri" keep rises above walls of uncut natural stone, and to the serene Kokura Castle Garden, where matcha and seasonal sweets are served in a tatami room overlooking the pond.

The walk closes at Tanga Market, affectionately known as "Kitakyushu's kitchen", a Showa-era arcade of some 120 shops brimming with fresh fish, seasonal produce and regional specialities. Limited to a maximum of eight guests, the tour is an unhurried, personal introduction to the flavours and traditions of this quietly compelling corner of Fukuoka.

❖ TOTO Museum

10:00 - 11:00 (01:00 h)

Commemorating the company's 100th anniversary, the TOTO Museum traces the founding spirit of TOTO alongside the history of the Japanese toilet and its remarkable path of invention. Hands-on displays invite you to compare everything from traditional Japanese-style toilets to Western models, and even fixtures designed for sumo wrestlers (yes, they have special toilets). The museum shop stocks original items created in collaboration with local companies. The museum is closed on Mondays; on Monday departures your guide adapts the itinerary, replacing this visit with longer time at the castle, garden and market.

❖ Kokura Castle

11:20 - 12:00 (40 min)

A symbol of the city, Kokura Castle was built between the end of the 16th century and the early 17th century. Its keep is a rare "kara-zukuri" tower, so named because the fifth floor is larger than the fourth, and its walls are built of uncut natural stones stacked one upon another. The architecture is especially beautiful in autumn and spring, and the top floor rewards you with sweeping views over Kokura.

❖ Kokura Castle Garden

On the east side of the castle, this pond-style garden occupies the former site of the Ogasawara family mansion. In the House of Manner and Etiquette you are served matcha (sencha) and seasonal sweets in a tatami room, then invited to stroll the grounds and take in the scenery around the "Nozoki Pond" beside the mansion.

❖ Tanga Market

Known as "Kitakyushu's kitchen", Tanga Market carries the retro atmosphere of the Showa era, most of its buildings dating to around 1955. Its roughly 120 shops sell fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, meat and ready-made side dishes, alongside local specialities such as "Jinda-ni" and even whale meat. At Daigaku-Do, a small eatery run by local university students, you can turn ingredients bought in the market into a rice-bowl dish, the perfect way to savour a lunch made from the local flavours you have just gathered.

Hotel pick-up is available only for hotels within Kokura City (Kokura Kita ward); hotel drop-off is not included.
Lunch is not included. At Tanga Market you can buy fresh local ingredients and enjoy them as a rice-bowl dish at Daigaku-Do, the student-run eatery.
The TOTO Museum is closed on Mondays. The tour still runs seven days a week; on Mondays your guide adapts the itinerary with longer stops at the castle, garden and market.
Children aged 6 to 12 join at the child rate; children under 5 are free of charge.
The tour is limited to a maximum of 8 participants.
