Overview
The eastern shore of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake, was the historical home of Nobunaga Oda, the warlord who set Japan on the path to unification in the sixteenth century. It was also the cradle of the country's early commercial life, a crossroads where goods and fortunes moved between the capital and the provinces.
You begin in Hikone, the castle town of the Ii family, loyal retainers of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Crowning the hill above the moat stands one of only twelve original castle keeps left in Japan, its three-story tower a designated National Treasure and the genuine four-hundred-year-old article rather than a postwar reconstruction.
From there the day turns to Omihachiman, home of the legendary Omi merchants, whose willow-lined canals and white storehouses preserve the atmosphere of an Edo-era trading town almost untouched by time.

Your guide greets you at the ticket gate of JR Hikone Station, an easy fifty-minute rapid train from Kyoto, ready to lead you into a side of Japan that most visitors never reach.
❖ Hikone Castle

The day opens at Hikone Castle, standing watch over the town for more than four hundred years and one of only a handful of original keeps in Japan to survive intact. Climb the steep wooden stairs inside the keep to the top floor, where the castle grounds and the city open out beneath you. The grounds are as rewarding as the keep itself, with an elegant daimyo garden to wander. Visit in cherry blossom season and you are in for a real treat.

A short walk away lies Genkyuen, a Japanese garden laid out in 1677 by the local lord as a retreat for his guests and family. You stroll this peaceful haven of ponds, islands and bridges at leisure, with the chance to pause for a cup of tea in the traditional teahouse overlooking the water.

Your guide leads you to a local restaurant of your choosing, a relaxed pause to refuel before the afternoon in Omihachiman.
❖ Hachiman-bori Canal
12:30 - 13:10 (40 min)
Cruise or walk the scenic Hachiman-bori Canal and step straight into living history. In the late sixteenth century the town's leaders linked Omihachiman to Lake Biwa, turning it into a thriving trading hub between Tokyo and Kyoto and the birthplace of the famed Omi merchants. Many of the white kura storehouses and machiya townhouses lining the water have survived intact, offering a rare glimpse of Edo-era life. The canal, flowing for nearly five kilometres, is a beloved filming location for period dramas, and its traditional architecture is a sight in itself.
❖ Mt. Hachiman

Ride the Hachimanyama ropeway to the summit of Mt. Hachiman, which rises behind the moat. From the top you take in sweeping views of the Hachiman canal, Lake Biwa and distant Azuchi Castle, with the ruins and streets of Omihachiman spread out below and the lush countryside reaching toward the eastern shoreline.
❖ Farewell at JR Omihachiman Station

The tour comes to a close at JR Omihachiman Station, where you part ways with your guide, the castle town and the canals of Lake Biwa's east coast fresh in memory.

A full six-hour walking tour on foot through two castle towns, so comfortable walking shoes are essential.
The climb inside the Hikone Castle keep involves steep, original wooden staircases.
The route is mostly outdoors: dress for the season and the day's weather, and bring sun protection in the warmer months.
Cherry blossom season (early to mid-April~) is a particularly beautiful time to visit, when the castle grounds and the canals are in full bloom.
