❖ The Ropeway Ascent over Tokyo Bay

Your day begins at Hama-Kanaya Station on the JR Uchibo Line, where you meet your guide. A ropeway then carries you toward the summit, the cabin rising over Tokyo Bay and the forested ridges of the Boso Peninsula. It is the classic first impression of Mt. Nokogiri: water, woodland and open sky in a single sweep.

❖ Nihon-ji Temple Precinct

The entire mountaintop sits within the grounds of Nihon-ji, a temple established in the eighth century. You walk its lavish natural landscape on the southern Boso Peninsula, where Buddhist figures are carved directly into the cliff face and quiet paths thread between the trees, all the way to the temple’s celebrated icons.

❖ The Great Buddha (Daibutsu)

At the heart of the precinct stands Japan’s largest Great Buddha. Seated and serene at thirty-one metres high, the Daibutsu rewards a slow, unhurried look, and the views opening up below it are every bit as memorable as the figure itself.

❖ Hell’s Peak (Jigoku-nozoki)

The highlight of the climb is Hell’s Peak, or Jigoku-nozoki, an observation point built out to the very tip of a rock protrusion. Stepping to the edge can inspire a thrill that, as locals say, equates to peering into the underworld itself. Steel fences line the drop, and you follow your guide’s instructions whenever you move to the cutting edge of the platform.

❖ Kanaya Harbor & a Tokyo Bay Seafood Lunch

Back at the base of the ropeway, you sit down to a local lunch of fresh seafood landed from Tokyo Bay. Around Kanaya Harbor the lanes are lined with souvenir shops, sushi-roll vendors, grilled-seafood stalls and cafes, each one something your guide is eager to share. When the day is done you can return by ferry from Kanaya Port toward Kurihama, or take the JR Uchibo Line back to central Tokyo.
