Mt. Takao Hiking Tour: Full Day including Hot Spring

A full-day hike on Michelin-three-star Mt. Takao: forest trails, the Yakuo-in temple, a summit view of Mt. Fuji, and a hot spring to close the day.

Overview

Mt. Takao sits 50 kilometres west of central Tokyo, quiet enough to feel far from the city and close enough for a day trip. Michelin awarded it three stars back in 2007, the same grade it gave Mt. Fuji, and the mountain has been a place of worship since 744. Your guide meets you at Keio Takaosanguchi Station at 9:00 and sets the pace for the day: a stop at the Takao 599 Museum to get oriented on the flora and fauna, then the climb itself on whichever trail matches your appetite for effort.

The ascent winds through cedar forest, past small statues and Shinto-Buddhist waypoints, until the path opens onto Yakuo-in Temple and, higher up, a summit observation deck that looks across the Kanto Plain to the skyscrapers of Tokyo, with Mt. Fuji on the horizon on clear days (most common in winter and early spring). Lunch at the top: soba, curry rice, or a Buddhist vegetarian set at the temple. The descent is on foot or by cable car or chairlift, ending with a long soak at Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, a hot spring right at the base of the mountain. The entrance fee is included.

Details
❖ Takao 599 Museum

30 min

Meet your guide at Keio Takaosanguchi Station at 9:00 and walk the short distance to the Takao 599 Museum. The name comes from the mountain's height: 599 metres. A 3D projection runs through the four seasons of Takao, and the exhibits cover the plants and animals you will see on the trail. A calm place to start the day and to ask your guide whatever you want to know before the climb.

❖ Hike Mt. Takao

4 h

The climb takes you up through cedar forest on the trail that best matches your level, from the paved main route to the wilder side tracks. Your guide reads the pace, stops where there is something to see, a shrine, a statue, a view, and is happy to break for water or a snack anywhere along the way. The trails weave past small Shinto and Buddhist waypoints tied to over a millennium of mountain worship.

❖ Yakuo-in Temple

30 min

Partway up the mountain, the trail passes through Yakuo-in, founded in 744 and considered the spiritual heart of Mt. Takao. The temple is dedicated to the tengu, long-nosed mountain spirits that guard the mountain in local folklore. Time to walk the halls, make an offering if you wish, and catch your breath before the final push to the summit.

❖ Lunch at the Summit

1 h

From the observation deck the Kanto Plain spreads out below and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji rises on the horizon. Lunch is at one of the small restaurants near the top: soba, udon, or curry rice, with a Buddhist vegetarian set (suitable for vegans) available at the temple if you want something closer to pilgrimage cuisine.

❖ Takaosan Onsen

1 h

Descend on foot or, if you prefer, by cable car or chairlift (the chairlift has no safety bar, so hold on). The tour ends at Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, a short walk from the station. Indoor and outdoor pools, including a seasonal sakura-scented bath, ease tired legs after the hike. Entry is included in the tour price.
