Mt. Takao Hiking Tour: Full Day including Hot Spring

Hike this mystical mountain and be rewarded with a view of Mt. Fuji

Overview

Located about 50 kilometres west of central Tokyo, Mt. Takao is the most popular climbing spot in the Kanto area: a national park awarded three Michelin stars alongside Mt. Fuji, where leisurely hiking remains possible even on a day trip from the capital. The mountain has held spiritual significance since 744, when Emperor Shomu encouraged followers to come here and founded Yakuo-in, the temple that still presides over its trails today.

Your guide meets you at Keio Takaosanguchi Station at 9:00. The day begins with an orientation at the Takao 599 Museum, a 3D installation devoted to the flora and fauna of the mountain. From there you choose the trail that suits your pace, ranging from paved main routes to wilder dirt tracks far off the beaten path. Along the climb, small Shinto and Buddhist statues mark a thousand years of mountain worship, and the path opens onto Yakuo-in Temple, dedicated to the legendary tengu that guard the mountain.

From the summit observation deck the Kanto Plain spreads out below, with the skyscrapers of Tokyo on one side and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji on the horizon. Lunch is at one of the small restaurants near the top: soba or curry rice, or a Buddhist vegetarian set served at the temple. The descent is on foot or, if you prefer, by cable car or chairlift, ending with a long soak at Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, a hot spring right at the base of the mountain. Entry is included in the tour price.

Details
❖ Keio Takaosanguchi Station

09:00

Your guide meets you at the exit gates of Keio Takaosanguchi Station, the last stop on the Keio Line and about 50 minutes from Shinjuku. A short orientation, a quick equipment check, then the day begins with a five-minute walk to the foot of the mountain.

❖ Takao 599 Museum

09:00 - 09:30 (30 min)

Walk the short distance from the station to the Takao 599 Museum, named after the mountain's height of 599 metres. Inside, a 3D installation runs through the four seasons of Takao, and the exhibits introduce the plants and animals you will encounter on the trail. A calm place to start the day and to ask your guide whatever you want to know before the climb.

❖ Hike Mt. Takao

09:30 - 11:00 (1:30 h)

The climb takes you up through cedar forest on the trail that best matches your level, from the paved main route to the wilder side tracks. Your guide reads the pace, stops where there is something to see (a shrine, a statue, or a view), and is happy to break for water or a snack anywhere along the way. The path weaves past small Shinto and Buddhist waypoints tied to over a millennium of mountain worship.

❖ Yakuo-in Temple

11:00 - 11:30 (30 min)

Partway up the mountain, the trail passes through Yakuo-in, founded in 744 and considered the spiritual heart of Mt. Takao. The colourful main hall, with its blue-tiled roof and carved facade, is one of the most photographed sights on the climb. Time to walk the halls, make an offering if you wish, and catch your breath before the final push to the summit.

Watching over the temple grounds are bronze statues of the tengu, the long-nosed mountain spirits that, in local folklore, guard Mt. Takao and serve the deity Izuna Daigongen. Sword in hand and wings folded, they are said to punish the proud and protect those who climb the mountain with a respectful heart.

❖ Lunch at the Summit

11:30 - 12:30 (1:00 h)

From the observation deck the Kanto Plain spreads out below and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji rises on the horizon. Lunch is at one of the small restaurants near the top: soba, udon, or curry rice, with a Buddhist vegetarian set (suitable for vegans) available at the temple if you want something closer to pilgrimage cuisine.

❖ Takaosan Onsen

13:30 - 14:30 (1:00 h)

Descend on foot or, if you prefer, by cable car or chairlift (the chairlift has no safety bar, so hold on tight). The tour ends at Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu, a short walk from the station. Indoor and outdoor pools, including a seasonal sakura-scented bath, ease tired legs after the hike. Entry is included in the tour price.
