Narita Walking Tour
A great tour for those with a layover at Narita Airport. Experience Japanese culture at the interesting yet often overlooked town of Narita.
Overview
The tour begins at Omotesando, an 800-metre historic shopping street that has welcomed travellers since the Edo era. You stroll past time-worn eel restaurants, wooden inns that preserve the atmosphere of old Japan, and family-run shops selling hand-made Narita rice crackers, teppo-zuke pickles, yokan sweets, and local sake.
From there you reach Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, founded in the year 940 to enshrine the Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo. The grounds reveal a fifteen-metre zelkova-wood gate, the Nio-mon gate built in 1830 and designated a National Important Cultural Property, and a vermilion three-storey Edo-era pagoda that makes for a striking photograph. Beyond stands the great Peace Pagoda, crowned with nine golden rings (called kurin) and adorned inside with vividly painted mandara depicting the enlightened Buddhist cosmos.
After the temple, you wander the expansive Japanese and Western-style temple gardens, a tranquil pause before the tour concludes at the Honten Sake Brewery. Its flagship Chomeisen ("Spring of Longevity") sake has won several prestigious competitions, brewed from the pristine spring water once said to heal pilgrims. Sample Chomeisen and seasonal varieties from ¥500-700 per glass, and leave Narita with the unhurried elegance of old Japan close at hand.
Details
❖ Meeting at Keisei Narita Station
Your English-speaking guide greets you at the ticket gate of Keisei Narita Station, just a short ride from Narita International Airport. From here the historic town centre lies within easy walking distance, making this tour an ideal way to make the most of a long layover or an extra day in Tokyo.
❖ Omotesando Shopping Street
45 min

The tour begins along Omotesando, an 800-metre approach road that has welcomed pilgrims and travellers since the Edo era. You traverse the entire length, pausing at eel restaurants that have served the same speciality for generations, traditional wooden inns whose facades feel unchanged in centuries, and family-run shops selling hand-made Narita rice crackers, teppo-zuke gourd pickles, yokan sweet bean paste, local sake, and other Japanese confections. Your guide also points out the recommended lunch spots and souvenir stops you may wish to return to after the tour.
❖ Naritasan Shinshoji Temple
1:00 h

At the top of Omotesando rises Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, founded in the year 940 to enshrine the Buddhist deity Fudo Myoo. The temple grounds unfold a sequence of remarkable structures: a fifteen-metre gate carved from Japanese zelkova (keyaki) wood; the Nio-mon gate built in 1830 and designated a National Important Cultural Property; and the vivid vermilion three-storey Edo-era pagoda that frames one of the most photographed scenes in Narita. Beyond stands the great Peace Pagoda, crowned with nine golden rings known as kurin, with brilliantly coloured mandara painted across its inner walls and ceilings depicting the enlightened Buddhist cosmos.
❖ Naritasan Park and Temple Gardens
45 min

Stretching behind the temple complex, the expansive Naritasan Park combines Japanese and Western-style gardens around tranquil ponds, wooded paths, and a quiet pavilion that floats above the water on wooden piers. Maple-shaded stone steps wind through the forest above the main pond, and each season unveils its own palette: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greens in summer, fiery foliage in autumn, and a restrained beauty in winter. A peaceful interlude after the temple intensity, the park is best savoured slowly.
❖ Honten Sake Brewery
30 min

The tour concludes at Honten Sake Brewery, home of Chomeisen ("Spring of Longevity"), a sake brand celebrated at several prestigious national competitions. The water drawn for brewing is a top-quality local spring once said to heal the illnesses of pilgrims, and the brewery small tasting counter offers Chomeisen and a rotation of seasonal sakes at ¥500-700 per glass. A fitting close to a walk through a town where Japanese history and traditional culture run quietly through every street.
❖ Return to Keisei Narita Station
The tour ends back at Keisei Narita Station, from where you can continue your journey to Tokyo or return directly to Narita International Airport with plenty of time to spare before your onward flight.
