Shirakawa-go & Hida-Takayama Private Tour: Mountain Village Experience
A private day trip from Nagoya into the Hida mountains: Takayama's Edo old town and the gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go, door to door.
Overview
A full-day private trip from Nagoya into the Hida mountains, where the roads climb past roadside stations and the valleys open onto two of the most preserved towns in central Japan. Your driver meets you at your Nagoya hotel in the morning and takes you first to Hida-Takayama, a former castle town often called "Little Kyoto" of the Alps, with narrow lanes of dark-wood sake breweries and merchants' houses kept almost as they were four hundred years ago.
After lunch in the old town and time at the Hida Folk Village (or, if you prefer something hands-on, a craft experience at the Hida Takayama Crafts Experience Center), you continue deeper into the mountains to Shirakawa-go, the UNESCO village of gassho-zukuri farmhouses whose steep thatched roofs are built to shed the heavy winter snow. Ogimachi, the main hamlet, is yours to explore at your own pace before the drive back to Nagoya. The tour is private door to door: transport, tolls and fuel are included; an English-speaking interpreter guide can be arranged on request.
Details
❖ Depart Nagoya
2 h 25 min
Your driver meets you in your hotel lobby in Nagoya and sets off north into the mountains. The road climbs for roughly two to three hours with a short stop at a roadside station for coffee and a stretch before Takayama comes into view.
❖ Hida-Takayama: Furui Machinami & Takayama Jinya
1 h 30 min

Set at altitude and long cut off from the rest of Japan, Takayama grew its own quiet character and is often called the Little Kyoto of the Alps. The Sanmachi old town, known as Furui Machinami, is a grid of narrow lanes laid out over four hundred years ago by the former samurai Kanamori Nagachika; dark-wood sake breweries and merchants' houses still line the streets, and the Takayama Jinya, the only surviving Edo-era government office in Japan, stands a short walk away.
❖ Lunch in the old town
45 min

Lunch is at your choice among the restaurants and small counters of the old town. Takayama's own specialties are an easy pick: Hida beef, Takayama ramen, and local sake from breweries that have worked this corner of the Alps for generations.
❖ Hida Folk Village (or Crafts Experience Center)
50 min

Two options for the afternoon. The Hida Folk Village is an open-air collection of thatched-roof farmhouses moved from across the Hida district and set in the hills above town, with daily tools, looms and shingle-making workshops kept in working order. If you prefer something hands-on, the Hida Takayama Crafts Experience Center lets you try senbei making, ceramic painting, or a sarubobo doll, the red cloth charm mothers traditionally sewed for their daughters. Entrance and craft fees are paid on the day.
❖ Shirakawa-go
2 h 10 min

A further drive into the mountains brings you to Shirakawa-go and the hamlet of Ogimachi, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its almost-three-hundred-year-old gassho-zukuri farmhouses. The steep thatched roofs, shaped like hands joined in prayer, are built to shed the deep winter snow. You have free time to walk the village: the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen open-air museum, the Shiroyama viewpoint over the valley, Myozenji Temple with its own thatched roof, and the Shirakawa-go no Yu hot spring are all within a short walk.
❖ Return to Nagoya
2 h 30 min
Leave Shirakawa-go in the late afternoon for the drive back to Nagoya, with a quick break at a roadside station along the way. Drop-off at your hotel.

Meeting Point
This tour is driver-only by default. Your driver may or may not speak English; a tablet translator is provided for communication.
An English-speaking interpreter guide can be arranged for an additional fee. Please request at the time of booking.
The tour is a full day: approximately 10.5 hours door to door from your Nagoya hotel. Expect roughly two to three hours of driving in each direction.
From December to April, snow tires or chains are used on the mountain roads; this can add to the transport cost in the peak winter window.
During the high seasons such as December, January, March, and April, when our affiliated cab firms are fully booked, we may need to request vehicle arrangements from a non-affiliated cab firm. In such cases, please be aware that the price may be higher than usual. Your understanding on this matter would be appreciated.
Ogimachi village streets can be narrow and uneven. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Meals, facility entries and craft fees are paid on the day, in cash where required.
Hotel pick-up and drop-off within Nagoya city. Your driver will meet you in the hotel lobby holding a signboard with your name.
