Sumida River Cruise on a traditional "Yakatabune" Boat
Experience a "Yakatabune," or houseboat shaped boat.
Overview
Step aboard a traditional Yakatabune, a Japanese houseboat whose origins trace back to the Edo Era under the eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune in the mid-eighteenth century. These elegant covered boats became especially beloved in summer, when the old capital of Edo grew oppressively warm, and townspeople would drift onto the river and out to sea in search of cooler breezes. Three centuries later, the same gentle pastime endures, offering guests a serene window onto Tokyo and its enduring waterborne traditions.
Your voyage glides down the famed Sumida River and into the wide expanse of Tokyo Bay, threading past illuminated city skylines and signature landmarks: the manmade island of Odaiba, the soaring red arches of Rainbow Bridge viewed up close from the comfort of the deck, and the luminous spire of Tokyo Sky Tree. Onboard, guests are served a refined Japanese meal of tempura, sashimi, and seasonal small plates, accompanied by an unlimited selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
In springtime, the boat passes beneath the celebrated Senbonzakura (literally "a thousand cherry trees"), whose blossoms line both banks of the Sumida and glow softly under evening illumination. Whether by daylight or after dark, when the Sky Tree shimmers above and the cherry trees are lit from below, the cruise unfolds as a quietly elegant celebration of Tokyo, savoured with friends or family from the unhurried perspective of the water.

About the Yakatabune Experience

A Yakatabune is a traditional Japanese houseboat, originally favoured by the nobility of the Edo period for leisurely entertainments on the water. Long, low-slung, and decorated with rows of paper lanterns along the eaves, the boat slips quietly across the river while guests recline on tatami matting and dine at low lacquered tables. The hosts wear formal kimono, and the unhurried rhythm of the evening, the lantern light, and the changing scenery beyond the windows together compose an experience that has changed remarkably little over centuries.

The Sumida River and Tokyo Bay Route

The cruise traces the lower stretch of the Sumida River before opening out into the broad waters of Tokyo Bay. From the deck, guests pass beneath several of Tokyo's historic river bridges, glide alongside the artificial island of Odaiba with the Aqua City waterfront in view, and approach the unmistakable scarlet steel of Rainbow Bridge. Looking back toward the city, the silhouette of Tokyo Sky Tree rises above the skyline and, once darkness falls, glows in its signature illumination. In spring, the riverbanks are lined with the cherry trees of Senbonzakura, their canopies reflected on the dark water.
Onboard Cuisine and Atmosphere

Step aboard and the cabin opens into a single elongated space laid with tatami flooring and warm-cushioned zabuton, low lacquered tables running its length. Paper lanterns in red and amber hang from the ceiling in a steady rhythm, their light soft and unhurried, throwing gentle reflections onto polished wood. Windows line both flanks at table level, so the city moves quietly past while conversation flows around the dishes. The atmosphere is intimate and generously paced, designed to be savoured slowly from the moment of boarding to the gentle return to the pier, the river itself acting as the evening's quiet conductor.

The meal unfolds as a multi-course progression centred on freshly fried tempura and seasonal sashimi, presented on a wooden boat-shaped tray and accompanied by an assortment of side dishes that change with the time of year. Smaller bowls of vegetable preparations, tofu and pickles round out each setting, balancing texture and palate between courses. An all-you-can-drink menu accompanies the food and includes beer, sake, shochu, wine and a range of non-alcoholic options, refilled freely throughout the cruise. Every course is brought to the table while the river glides past the open windows.
