Sumo Morning Practice Viewing
Experience the battlefields of the mighty wrestlers in front of you!
Overview
Interested in experiencing the real pleasure of Japan’s national sport of Sumo in front of your very own eyes? In recent years, the popularity of Sumo wrestling has grown to the point that tickets for official events have become difficult to obtain. Morning practice, however, where the grit of the wrestlers and their dripping sweat unfolds inside a proper arena, remains accessible and offers a remarkable opportunity to discover the true charm of the sport.
Many sumo stables are dotted across Sumida Ward, Tokyo, home to dedicated wrestlers striving to excel. During morning practice you can see how the body of a well-trained, big wrestler strikes in front of you, and witness the pure pleasures of real and severe sumo wrestling, unmediated by television live broadcasts. Scattered sweat, heavy breathing, master and senior wrestlers’ scolding encouragement: all these things await your attention.
To avoid disturbing the practicing wrestlers, your guide will explain various aspects of the sport before you enter. Commemorative photographs with the wrestlers are also possible after training. While practice itself is the tough expression of the sport, this relaxed photography time is a valuable highlight of the tour, so please tell us which sumo wrestler you wish to greet together.

Details
The morning begins early at a working sumo stable in Sumida Ward. The total experience lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, following the natural arc of a real training session. Below is the structure you can expect, with approximate times that will adapt to each stable’s rhythm on the day.
❖ Arrival at the Stable & Briefing
08:00 - 08:15 (15 min)

Your morning begins at the sumo stable in Sumida Ward, the historical heart of professional sumo in Tokyo. Meet your guide at the entrance for a quiet briefing on viewing etiquette: silence during sessions, phones on silent mode, no drinking or smoking inside the keiko-ba (practice arena), no video recording or online posting. The guide also explains what to expect from the morning, the ranks of the wrestlers you will see, and the structure of the training that follows.
❖ Shiko & Foundational Drills
08:15 - 08:45 (30 min)

The wrestlers open the session with shiko, the iconic high leg-raise that builds balance, stability and lower-body power. From the back of the arena you witness the rhythm and precision of these foundational movements: footwork drills, knee bends, posture corrections from senior wrestlers. The discipline of even the youngest deshi (apprentices) is immediately apparent.
❖ Butsukari-geiko & Sparring Bouts
08:45 - 09:30 (45 min)

The intensity rises with butsukari-geiko (charging drills) and live sparring bouts. Wrestlers throw themselves shoulder-first against their seniors and engage in repeated mawashi (belt) grappling on the clay floor. You hear the impact of bodies colliding, the heavy breathing, the master’s scolding voice correcting form in real time. This is sumo in its purest form, unfiltered by the spectacle of tournaments.
❖ Circle Training & Senior Demonstration
09:30 - 09:50 (20 min)

As the session draws towards a close, the wrestlers gather in a circle for collective drills, observing each other and absorbing technique from the most senior members of the stable. The atmosphere becomes more focused than tense, and the bond between the wrestlers becomes visible in the discipline of their movement.
❖ Cool-down Stretching & Commemorative Photographs
09:50 - 10:00 (10 min)

The morning closes with matawari stretching, sumo’s signature deep splits that maintain the flexibility of the wrestlers. Afterwards your guide arranges the highlight that most guests cherish: commemorative photographs with the wrestlers. The mood softens, the wrestlers smile, and you can request to be photographed with the wrestler whose performance impressed you the most. Please share with the guide your preference when arriving.
