Yanaka Walking Tour: Historic and Traditional District of Tokyo
Tokyo's quiet quarter: Edo-era temples, a historic cemetery, a shrine under cedars, and the Showa-era shops of Yanaka Ginza, all on foot with a local guide.
Overview
Yanaka is Tokyo's historic quarter: centuries-old temples, a vast reien (cemetery) with 7,000 graves, an ancient shrine set under old trees, and a shopping street that still keeps the tone of old Shitamachi. Three and a half hours on foot are enough to step out of the city's noise and spend time with its older, slower register.
Your guide accompanies you through the neighbourhood at a relaxed pace, with time to linger at a temple courtyard or turn into a side lane for the details you would miss on your own. A mini-retreat within a Tokyo trip: historic, uncrowded, and a quiet counterpoint to the city you are also here to see.
Details
❖ Tennoji Temple

A Buddhist temple on the edge of Yanaka Cemetery, dating back to 1274. The grounds sit behind an old wooden gate inside a quiet garden, anchored by the bronze Tennoji Daibutsu, a 1690 statue still watching over the neighbourhood.
❖ Yanaka Cemetery

A 100,000-square-metre burial ground with more than 7,000 graves. Established in 1871 after the Meiji Restoration split Buddhist and Shinto rites, it is as much a park as a cemetery: cherry trees, wide walking paths, and a sense of pause rare in Tokyo.
❖ Yuka-An ※ Optional

On the second floor of the Gallery Okubo building, a small tatami tea room offers a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Optional, not included in the tour price (¥3,000 per person, paid in cash at the venue). Available only for morning tours; the tea room opens at 11:00.
❖ Gyokurinji Temple

A Soto-school temple founded in 1591. Among its quieter details is a statue of Chiyonofuji, one of Japan's great sumo yokozuna, placed in the grounds in 2011.
❖ Nezu Shrine

One of Japan's oldest shrines, set under enormous old trees. Its famous azalea garden blooms across late April and early May, when the hillside fills with waves of pink, red, and white (the Tsutsuji Matsuri season). Ponds, wooden halls, and a row of small vermillion torii gates make this a quietly striking stop in any month.
❖ Yanaka Ginza Street

One of Tokyo's best-known Shitamachi shopping streets. Small shops line the narrow lane, carrying the nostalgic old-town atmosphere Yanaka is known for, a quiet counterpoint to the busier sides of Tokyo.
